A resounding victory on our travels, who'd have predicted that?
A fully committed, full stretch, diving reverse around the keeper for his, and the teams, second goal - you couldn't have scripted that in a Disney movie.
Having to come off from the stretch/impact/shock - that was a given and I'd take it every game if we could!
This was Gosport 2's (second from bottom on 3 points and -33 GD) visiting Romsey 3's (4th place on 19 points even after 6 deducted and +23 GD) and playing with a team that had over 45 years between it's youngest and oldest player!

The first 15 minutes saw Romsey with a lot of the pressure and camped in the GBHC 25 however, the combination of Chris and Sander in the middle kept the main threat at bay forcing Romsey onto the wings where Gary and Darren held firm. Despite the obvious pace and youthful advantage the GBHC defence stood strong. Steadily GBHC built up their momentum with precision balls finding players in space, the number of passes to white sticks (GBHC ones I mean) rapidly grew and after a 5 pass move out of defence the ball reached Shorty at the top of the Romsey D but with his back to goal. Undeterred, and with a turn even Wayne Sleep would have been proud of, he was clear of both markers and slotting the ball left of the keeper into the back of the goal. The umpires refuted the appeal for a foot by Romsey and GBHC had their lead.
The game opened up and whilst Romsey got into the GBHC half, goal-scoring chances were kept to a bare minimum with Jack having to make a couple of near-post blocks as shooting options were from wide or not at all.
The GBHC 16's had a high success rate at finding the intended player with Ben Heyward and Jacobs on the receiving end of a healthy handful each and immediately switching defence into attack. It was through this route that a ball was fed into Shorty towards the left of the Romsey D, who then, using his highly tuned strikers nous he drew the keeper off his line and played him like a cat with a mouse. As the keeper, struggling with the speed and silky skills before him went to ground with an outstretched stick Shorty pushed the ball an extra 6 inches (150mm for the younger readers) beyond the keepers despairing stick and dived to clip a reverse dink into the gaping mouth of the goal, 2-0 to GBHC.
With 3 subs available these were brought in seamlessly to ensure the energy and tempo of the game didn't ease. This enabled GBHC to go into the half time break 2 goals to the good.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Romsey working the ball hard down the flanks but getting little joy where it mattered. The advantage of age eventually led to Romsey getting a goal back, though GBHC had missed a couple of golden opportunities to extend their lead with the final strike (or lack of) being the only missing feature. Had a couple of those found the back of the net then Darren would have been getting a jug in whilst Stu would have walked off with goal of the match. With the score at 2-1 and 9 minutes left on the clock GBHC dug a bit deeper and Matt stretched his legs and lungs to get in a couple of pitch covering runs, no goals resulted but time was being eaten up. Romsey were now fully committed and pushing everyone they could forward. and then came the play of the game! GBHC regained possession just outside their own D, worked 3 or 4 short passes into the Romsey 25 then fed Darren at the top of the D who slotted home with almost the last touch of the game. The restart took place but time was blown almost immediately.
Great game to watch, stunning teamwork and a well deserved result.
