Under 8’s

The day started in bright sunshine but very cold conditions with horrible wind coming across the pitch. 3 pitches were set up, with a rather larger than usual middle pitch which the Gosport under 8’s with only 7 players due to half term had to play their first 2 games. The first game was a close affair with players working each other out. Nathan and Jacob working really well in attack, and Mia break down every attack that the opposition made. On the odd occasion that opposition did get through the Taylor was there at the back to keep the ball out of the net, or deflect it wide. This theme continued through some very close games, with Isla and Molly becoming greater influences on the games as the tournament progressed with great tackling and tireless running despite there being no Gosport Subs.

Gosport’s record was envious, 1 draw and 3 wins, scoring many goals on the way, bought them to the last game of the tournament against a very impressive Fareham side, surely this would be a bigger test. A re jig in tactics from Coach Mark Short saw a slightly different formation to give the Gosport team a bit more of a defensive look, step forward Jacob Short who decided that attack was the best form of defence and with a strong platform behind him from the rest of team, but in a fantastic performance scoring at least 3 if not 4 fantastic individual goals with him running from the almost his own half on several occasions.

The under 8’s should rightfully be proud of their performance, 4 wins and draw was a fantastic result for a team missing a couple of key players and with no substitutes. Great hockey was played and not a backwards step taken.
