The relentless sun shone down on the 12 members of the Ladies 1s who battled hangovers and grumpy men to face Basingstoke in our first game of the season, in our brand new (well, in comparison) home ground of HMS Sultan.
The ladies started off well, with a nice half lap warm up to ease us into the game. The opposition on the other hand, with their army of players, were taking things a little too seriously, so we let them knacker themselves out whilst we all warmed Emily up! Team bonding or something! Things got even better, with the captain winning the toss for us to have first pushback. The entire pitch set up.... only to realise we had no ball out and ready to play with...doh!
Finally we were off, and Basingstoke pushed hard from the start. The night before had proved a bit too much for Nicky Muir on her debut, blaming the sunglasses on the jaeger bombs, but she battled well at left back, with the opposition keeping her busy! Carole Carr unfortunately couldn't play with us, but put her loud voice to good use, encouraging her partner in crime Emily Simpson in goal, who had returned home just over 24 hours ago and was have a stormy, diving here there and everywhere. George Davies was also receiving loads of encouragement in her debut at center back, denying 'Stoke opportunities at goal and causing havoc with their attackers!
Despite their constant attack, we were able to work our way into the oppositions D, with Donna Sutton heading up and down the right wing, keeping her defenders on their toes. Cookie Ayriss on the left wing, another debut game, ran rings around the opposition, with visible rising frustration on their faces!
Up front we had Jenna Dickerson, stepping up from the 2s, holding her own and having a few shots on goal, causing their keeper to flounder on the floor a few times. Jo Head, in her new position as full time 1s player, worked well with other team members and also had a few pops at goal, but again, to no avail.
Back up the other end, the almost constant attack and multiple short corners got the better of the Gosport defense, and by half time 2 goals had snuck over the line.
After a half time talk, sweets, plenty of water, an attack on our young supporters by a rogue umbrella, and a waterbottle shower to cool us down, we were back to it, this time facing the sun!
Charlie Dowell, in her first game back, was showing her son how to play, with multiple perfect tackles, fab communication a knack for outwitting the opposition. However, maybe we should question her dedication to the cause, as when asked what position she would prefer, she responded with "wherever there is less running!" Celia Billett was cool as a cucumber in the center, distributing the ball well and getting in the way of the attackers. The battle bus seemed pretty impressed by her performance as it happily carried her off to the pub after!
Back in defense the pressure was on again, with Sophie Philcox almost saving a goal with a tremendous, 100% dedicated dive onto the line, just missing the ball as it rolled in. Imogen Demetriou outwitted the opposition as she tap-tapped her way around the attack on multiple occasions, releasing it for further attacks for us on goal. Unfortunately we just couldn't seem to get it in, but it wasn't for lack of trying!
Final score saw Basingstoke win 4-0, but it was a well fought game and it did not reflect Gosports game play at all. For the first league game back, the first time the ladies had played as a team, only 1 sub vs an army of red, and temperatures hotter than an oven, I couldn't have asked for more from the team. Basingstoke came looking for an easy game, and we sure as hell did not give them one! Well played all.
Back at the Windsor we had a lovely sausage casserole followed by home made lemon drizzle cake, courtesy of Donna, yum yum!
321s winner George Davies (the trophy must go on an adventure this week)
2nd Cookie
3rd Imi
However, well played all. Everyone was voted for in the 321s, reflecting the hard work that went into the game.
Next week we face Alton away, see you there!
